Okay, I'm starting a new theme-post series (yes, one of those series I start but never continue).
Most ridiculous names ever.
Not names of people, no, because that would be boringly unoriginal. And cruel. People with silly names can't help it. Their parents, sure, but that's another can of worms.
This will be an inventory of crazy, dumb, funny or otherwise inappropriate taxonomical names given by biologists to the organisms they describe (somewhat in the spirit of "Molecules with silly or unusual names", which features such popular favorites as "arsole", "windowpane" and "moronic acid"). Because taxonomy is tough enough without going completely over the top with the names.
I mean, seriously.
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans ?
I would say "What a mouthful!" but considering that this is a bacterium normally found in the oral flora, such a pun would be in very poor taste indeed. *double groan*
Whatever. I'm definitely never moving into the field of oral microbiota study, for fear of ever having to pronounce that name in a presentation.
